1980-09-07 London, England - Macfistofly collection - AUDIO

Another one from way back, a very early part of my collection.
Notable show as the band opens for Echo & The Bunnymen and the crowd is fairly unreceptive, with Bono lossing his cool a bit (sarcastic remarks, sort of freaks out shouting before the recording fades out).
Something to remember the next time you're ignoring an opening band!

Audience recording from 1980 so not the finest specimen ever heard, but certainly decipherable and worthy of the collector.
Download just one track for a sample if you wish, but the whole show is not that long.

Enjoy but don't sell.

Remarkable Quality - in my opinion even better than some soundboards we find around.

AUDIO: Montreal, Canada 2011.07.08

U2, Hyppodrome de Montreal,
8 Juillet 2011, first of two shows.

The gears: Creative JB3 recorder at 44 khz, Sound-Pro Mics, battery box set at 107hz bass roll-off. Normalized in SoundForge, split with CDWave, FLAC level 8.

I think this is an excellent recording, which gets much better after a couple of songs.

Well, what to say...a fantastic concert, which matched the hype.  Glad they played so much of Achtung Baby :-)

Notice the a-cappela version of The Beatles' Rain, as a thunderstorm hit the 80 000 + crowd just as the band finished the last song.

Comments:

Good performance by U2 at Soldier Field near the close of their 360 tour, 364 days after the originally scheduled date.  Many changes have been made to the setlist since the North American tour opened in Chicago nearly two years ago -- all but three of the new songs have been dropped from the set, and the opening sequence showcases the nearly 20-year-old "Achtung Baby," which is a big improvement in my opinion.  Overall, I thought the performance and song selection was a lot more compelling than the first leg of the tour.  The band gave a high-energy performance all the way through, fueled by a vocal sellout crowd of 60,000 -- there was not an empty seat to be seen all the way to the top of the stadium.

The emotional highlight, of course, was "One Tree Hill," performed in honor of the 25th anniversary of Greg Carroll's death.  This was clearly tentative and under-rehearsed, but it didn't matter.  One of the coolest moments I've seen at any U2 show over the years.

The recording is pretty good, although I have no doubt that there are better recordings out there.  I was in line with the right speaker stack about halfway back on the floor, and the sound was great.  Vocals are prominent in the mix, and there isn't too much crowd interference near the microphones.  As luck would have it, my flash card errored out and the deck shut off about 30 seconds into OTH, so the last track is patched from the source recorded by my friend standing next to me.  The cutover is pretty seamless, though you might notice that the last track has more clarity on the upper ranges and a little more crowd noise due to the audience members to his right.

A great show in Miami by U2 in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Bono talking quite a bit between songs and expressing good feelings about Miami. Most of the day the weather forecast was looking very bad for showtime, but thankfully there wasn't a drop of rain. Excellent quality.

AUDIO: 2010.12.13 Sydney, Australia Blackout's Approved Remaster

U2 - Sydney, Australia
ANZ Stadium
13th of December 2010 [Blackout's Approved Remaster]

Churchaudio Cardioids > CA Pre-amp > Edirol R09 > Adobe Audition

ANZ stadium had actually announced in it's visitor information for this show that it was ok to bring personal recorders, as long as the recording is not used commercially! So, is this one of the first truly legal U2 torrents? Did the band have a say in this?
I recorded from about 5 meters in front of the soundboard, which is about 50 meters away from the stage, pretty much from the centre.
I moved occasionally to dutch fans that were a little too enthusiastic, or drunk, or both.

[Blackout Comments:]

This was an excellent recording that had a few transfer and mastering issues, which needed to be addressed. After some work and with gwrang's request and approval here is a superior transfer of the master that has now been been mastered to allow this recording to truely shine. There were many processes applied to this recording here which were not addressed in gwrang's original release, particially to address significant imbalance between the two mics in level and frequency response. The bottom end has had significant micro-attention, with the resultant bottom end now being tight and solid. The recording is now frequency balanced, transient controlled and a joy to listen to. There is no doubt this version has helped to give this recording several extra ratings points as a result. Congrats gwrang on a great recording, we are glad you took your rig on the day!

U2 returns to Winnipeg for the first time since Popmart (which was my first ever U2 concert back in 1997)
Throughout the band changeover, the scrolling screen refers to "Winipeg" which certainly doesn't go unnoticed
by the fans, or the band for that matter.

The Royal Canadian Air Force does a flyover just before the show starts.  The Poem before "Beautiful Day" is
actually the lyrics to "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" by Winnipeg's Bachman Turner Overdrive.  Despite "Moment
of Surrender" being on the printed setlist, the show ends after "With or Without You" either because of the
curfew or because of the ever dropping temperature.

Overall a pretty nice recording of a great night, there is a little wind pressure from time to time (which I
really only noticed in the quieter/acoustic spots of the set) but it was really quite windy in this small,
open-ended stadium.  Special thanks to the drunken idiots behind me, thank god for hypercards!
